Stress and anxiety have the power to destroy our peace of mind and rob us of our happiness.  It can present itself in different ways, from a knot in our stomach to feeling restless and not being able to sleep. It can sneak in as a vague sense of irritation or impatience, and may just look like a raised eyebrow, or silence rather than kindness.

We will explore how much of the stress and tension we normally experience comes from our mind. Through training in meditation and mindfulness we can reduce this stress. We will discover how we can learn to view every challenging situation we meet with the wisdom and peace of mind that enables us to accept and work with it more constructively. In this way we will be free of the normal stress we often experience in these situations.

Gradually we will develop the inner resilience and confidence to view every challenge we meet as an opportunity for personal growth and development.  In this way we can all learn what it means to live stress free and genuinely happy.

If something can be remedied
Why be unhappy about it?
And if there is no remedy for it,
There is still no point in being unhappy – Shantideva

In this course we will learn clear, positive and practical teachings and meditations to help us recognise, deal with, and eventually overcome our anxiety and stress.

Why are some people happier than others? Why is happiness often so elusive? We tend to make the attainment of happiness more complicated than it actually is, by believing that we need things such as success, praise, status, looks, material possessions and so forth to achieve it. The reality is that none of these things can give us lasting happiness and chasing them actually makes us prone to anxiety, frustration and disappointment.

Buddha explains simple attitudes that we can all learn to cultivate that will make us really happy. On this course we will learn to cultivate the happy minds of contentment, giving and humility. We will explore several meditations and ways of thinking that uplift the mind and we’ll see that by carrying these with mindfulness into our day we can maintain a light, joyful attitude whatever life throws our way.

On the surface of a stormy ocean, there are waves and there can be a lot of turbulence. But the deeper we go below the surface, the more still waters become regardless of the weather at the surface. By looking within our own mind, we can find similar stillness and refuge from the stress and chaos of our modern life. Happiness and suffering depend upon the mind.

Buddha teaches that the only real source of reliable happiness and inner peace is found within the mind. By meditating deeply on the nature of the mind, we can begin to taste the stillness and clarity that lie within.

During this course we will learn and practise meditations that will help us to experience mental clarity and inner peace by meditating of our mind. We will explore how meditating on our own mind offers us the ability to let go of stress and worry by enabling us to get a clearer, more dispassionate view of our own thoughts and feelings. As a result, we can begin to connect with our potential for deep stillness.
